19. Erdemoğlu Holding Chairman İbrahim Erdemoğlu, who spoke at the panel titled “Contributions of the University of Besni in terms of Education, Culture and Economics” organized within the scope of the Besni Education Day celebrations, stated that Mehmet Erdemoğlu Faculty of Architecture and Engineering will be operational next year and said, “We did not give up our idea of university in Besni.  We want to bring this issue to the agenda with our government and to bring the University to our Besni”.

In the panel organized by Erdemoğlu Holding Chairman İbrahim Erdemoğlu and Adıyaman University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Gündüz, in the Conference Hall of Girls’s Dormitory of Student Credits and Dormitories Board in Besni was moderated by one of our newspaper columnists Şaban Çağıran.

Speaking at the beginning of the panel, Adiyaman University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Gündüz said that they had the summit in Besni for a while. Giving information with statistical data, Gündüz said; “We reached the summit in Adıyaman in 2009. 2 thousand 67 students in 2010, 2 thousand 88 in 2011, let me tell you the last number is 1,912. If we were able to realize our projects at that time, you can be sure that at least 5 thousand students today and a minimum of 3 thousand of them would be studying at Mehmet Erdemoğlu Faculty of Architecture. “Currently there are 50 employees in Besni, 26 academicians, 11 administrative staff, and 13 friends in security”. He said

"Erdemoğlu Family does whatever they promise, people of Besni is the first witness to it"

I am the founding rector of Adıyaman University, I have always felt this pride, I have explained it everywhere, I have not done anything else in my life. I wanted to express that pride to everyone, including my children, and to experience it elsewhere. But now I am afraid to mention it from time to time.

In 2009, two great people blessed us for our idea of the Faculty of Architecture, they lead us, and we sat down with the District Governor, signed a protocol and set off. We prepared the project with our fellow professors from the Middle East Technical University and delivered it to the Erdemoğlu Family. These brave men do whatever they promise, you are the first witness to it. As soon as I got off the plane, I came and saw the faculty location. I was immensely proud. They fulfilled their promise but I could not,” he finished his speech.

Erdemoğlu; "The architect of our faculty dream is our father"

Later, Erdemoğlu Holding Chairman İbrahim Erdemoğlu, who made a speech on the contributions of the University to Besni, said; “The architect of our university dream is our father. Our father took the promise of a faculty to Besni when Adıyaman University was founded. In other words, considering the future of Besni, what can we do to Besni, he gave his promise under the conditions of that day, and we are solely obliged to fulfill this promise that our father made.

A little while ago, our professor talked about it very well, and I thank him for what he has done. However, you know, one year before the construction of the Faculty, we got into the thought of whether we could do Besni University beyond the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering. We have not given up on this idea. At this stage, we are planning that the Faculty will be operational next year. Hopefully, after that, we want to bring the University to our Besni by escalating this issue to the agenda with the people who govern our state.

Of course, what we call a university here is not just an institution between four walls. Now, I saw that our Municipality, including our people of Besni, changed their mind a little after the logic of the university. If it was not a dream of university, maybe it would not be a valley project Maybe the congress center would not have been considered if we did not have our faculty. “All of them trigger each other like the links of a chain,” he said.

"Scientific institutions of Turkey isvery weak”

Erdemoğlu, who answered Panel Moderator Şaban Çağıran's questions of “why not other departments but the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering, is there a special case with this? “ replies “There is no particular reason for this”. While negotiating with Adıyaman University during the faculty establishment stage, the thought that there is no Faculty of Architecture and that we should do this became dominant in our minds.  We then tried to add Engineering department and now its name has changed to Architecture and Engineering Faculty.

I see this clearly. Turkey's scientific, research, development, and innovation related training institutions are very weak. When you consider the statistics today, students graduating from Engineering and Science have a much higher opportunity to find a job.

"The way we should advance in education is too long"

Now, we need to consider the question that where we are in the course of education regionally as Turkey rather than these, small things make us satisfied, but we do need to consider where are we in the world.

I want to make a few determinations. The total number of 57 Islamic countries, there are 500 universities in 57 these countries including Turkey.  There are 5,500 universities in the United States. Now, according to these determinations, we should look at for what topic we are the first in the world.

None of the 500 universities in Islamic countries can find place in the success rate among the first 500 universities. There is neither a Turkish university nor an Islamic country university among the first 500 universities. That is to say, way that we must advance at this point of education is too long. We must shape our perspective according to these. In other words, we should look at what the world is doing at every point.

"We are on the route to the university"

Stating that there will be 5 departments in the faculty, Erdemoğlu continued as follows; “There will be 5 departments in the faculty, ie 4 Engineering and 1 Architecture departments. In other words, we are trying to prepare its infrastructure so that we can move to Besni University in the future if we have the chance. We are on the route to the university, but now we only can demand. I hope our government will lean towards this in the upcoming period,” he said.

"One in two thousand students in Turkey studying in schools that we have established"

Stating that every citizen has responsibilities towards their country, İbrahim Erdemoğlu continued as follows; “Our father always told us; “There is nothing belong to you or me, everything is mortal”. But we only have responsibilities.  Our responsibility is towards our people, our region, our country, and our state. This is why we struggle. Within the framework of this struggle, reaching someplace economically does not mean anything. Whatever can organize and contribute to the lifestyle of all layers of society must be done.

Everyone cares about their child.  You cannot guarantee your child's future by legating money, he/she will run out of money. You cannot guarantee it by property a property, he/she sells and spends. You cannot guarantee it by providing education, a junkie boy on the street may kill him/her with a knife. Therefore, our philosophy is; The future of our children is guaranteed if we can legate an industrialized, developed, cultured and rich country. Otherwise, we cannot go beyond deceiving ourselves. That's why we are responsible for the education of all children in society. However, we struggle to do these to the extent our strength and possibilities. To give an example, today, one in two thousand of 20 million students is studying in schools that we have established in Turkey, I hope we will further increase this number, "he said.

Every institution in Turkey considers itself superior in and inaccessible"

Erdemoğlu stating that all the institutions consider themselves superior and inaccessible in Turkey continued to his as follows; “There is one more problem that I think is a bleeding wound. Every institution in Turkey considers itself superior in and inaccessible in Turkey and asunder each other" You can see this in our political thoughts, family lives, and social structures. Therefore, we are actually in the same ship with all our institutions. Of course, we will criticize each other, but criticize constructively. We will try to be useful to each other, but instead of the question of what can I do, we are talking about finding other’s faults, we have to recover from this disease”.

"People who experience difficulties become successful"

Erdemoğlu, who gave advice to the youth at the panel, completed his speech with the following statements; “Actually, there is no need for much advice. Everything is quite simple. You shall do nothing to anyone else that you do not want done to yourself. You shall think of putting yourself in their shoes. When we ask this, there is an answer to what to do. And it should not be forgotten how our elders raised us.

When I look past now, I see this; the mindset of “I did not experience it, let my child experience, I did not live, let my child live it” is the greatest danger. If I do this, I am saying clearly, I would be disrespectful to myself. After a while, my child realizes that I disrespect myself, and he/she starts to be disrespectful to his/her parents. People who experience difficulties become successful Those who live comfortably are doomed to fail or collapse,” he said.

The panel then ended after submitting plaques to the panelists Mustafa Gündüz and İbrahim Erdemoğlu after questions and answers.
